Weight Loss Challenge...Still Struggling.

About three weeks ago I posted about my attempt to cut some lbs over the course of the next 6 months. If you missed the post and want to catch up, you can find it here. I figured I would update you guys on how I did on achieving my weekly goals plus let you know what my new goals are for this week. Here were my original goals:

Using smaller plates for my meals
Not returning for seconds
Eating more servings of vegetables and fruit
Taking more time to eat my meals

I knocked the first week's goals out of the park. We then added additional goals onto my original ones. My goals for the last two weeks have been the same. I still haven't scored 100% on accomplishing them, so until I do, we will not set new ones. Plus, I feel really comfortable with what they are and think that they are all very good to shoot for. Here are my goals for this week:

I will continue with small plates and no second servings
I will eat three servings of vegetables at least 3 days per week.
I will continue to slow down my eating by chewing more and more slowly, and setting food/utensil down between bites.
I will lift 3 days/week and spin 3 days/week. I will also do a separate workout on one of the weekend days.
I will watch the videos (that were sent to me) and begin playing around with the 12 Kg kettlebell.
I will ride my bike while Mandi runs at least 3 mornings/week.

So far, I'm still struggling with the same ones that I was struggling with last week. I feel like I am constantly hungry, so when that snack or meal finally comes, it's hard not to scarf it down. One good thing is that even tough I don't feel full immediately, I'm aware enough to know that it just takes my brain a little bit to register the feeling. Still, I'm not accomplishing all that I have set out to do, so I'm going to have to figure something out. As far as the three servings of veggies, I have improved, but I need to get better. I've tried to increase my salad intake, with the most yummy salad dressing ever (sesame ginger) and I've discovered that I love carrots...as long as they're dipped in hummus. If I could really nail down these last two I would be ready to move on to bigger and better things. I just really need to buckle down.

You guys were great at giving me tips last week and I took most of them to heart. If you have any additional tips or didn't chime in last week, please don't hold back. I need all of the help that I can get!

I started this journey at 205 and was down to 197 a week later. A week after that I was down to 193. Just weighed myself: 191.

I love veggies! I eat them daily. Think outside the box - doesn't have to be a salad. Saute some with rice, add them to mac & cheese (you can puree cauliflower and it won't change the flavor much), serve chicken on a bed of tomatoes and spinach, etc. As for the other - the brain/gut reaction takes about 20 min. So, eat 1/2 your plate or whatever your trick is, drink some water, enjoy talking to your wife, and wait a bit. If, 20 min. later you are still hungry, eat some more. Small meals with lots of snacks is best! If you are having a hard time not eating more b/c you are that hungry then eat bigger snacks (almonds, dried apricots, etc.)

Mmmmm...chicken laid on a bed of tomatoes and spinach sounds delightful!! Good tips Sydna, thank you!!!
Balsamic vinegar, tomatoes, olive oil, salt, pepper, spinach. Toss - and put Italian seasoned chicken on top! Very good. Lemon is your friend too. Adds lots of flavor without the calories. When in doubt: olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon juice & zest, red pepper flakes. Easy, flavorful and yum! Saute broccoli, grean beans, whatever in it. :)
Not a fan of Balsamic, but I could probably toss in Italian or Sesame Ginger. And I like that last little veggie saute ingredient list!
As a side note, that's a lot of weight loss in 3 weeks. If you can keep it to two - three pounds per week, it's healthier and it's easier to keep it off b/c it's a lifestyle adjustment rather than crash diet. :) BUT, congrats on the weight loss regardless!!! That's great news!

Yeah, I haven't really been crash dieting. I still eat the same types of foods, just less of it. I've also been stepping it up at spin class :)
If you eat more protein and fiber you will not be so hungry all the time. Eggs, lunchmeat(trurkey, roastbeef, ham) lowfat cheese stix, blueberries (have tons of fiber,as do raspberries) rye crips, whole wheat english muffins.

sneak in extra veggies....scramble eggs with salsa and wilted spinach, finely chop up(with a food chopper) carrots and add to tacomeat and sloppy joe meat, use spinach leafs instead of lettuce on anything you'd normally use lettuce for.(tear it up into small pcs.)

our new fav around here is grilled veggies: green pepper (sliced) or any color, sliced fresh mushrooms, sliced sweet onion, zucinni sliced, eggplant sliced. put into a ziplock bag and marinate with 2 tblsp of italian dressing or any other oil based dressing (greek, sundried tomatoe, etc) grill in a wok basket on med for about 45mins or till done to your liking. stir every 5 mins or so. we eat these several times a week and the leftovers are great on veggie burgers or in a salad.

snack on hard boiled eggs for extra protein.

I've lost 25lbs...at 1 lb a week!! so you are doing great! it takes about 3 weeks for your stomach to shrink from not eating as much food...pretty soon, you won't be so hungry and when you do eat alot of food, you won't feel good. haha
Good luck!

WW English Muffins are so good! I was skeptical at first. I buy the Oroweat Double Fiber no High Fructose Corn Syrup ones and put Peanut Butter on them. YUM! I second your fiber and protein comments and hard-boiled eggs! Also, you can usually sub things - like pesto instead of mayonnaise in potato salad or applesauce for half the oil in something baked. I'm in love with arugula! It's the best! :-)
Those are great tips Lisa!! I have eggs every morning for breakfast as well as whole wheat toast. Most days I have a sandwich for lunch with meat, lettuce, tomato, pickle.

I love your idea for the grilled veggies. Sounds deelish!!

Great job on your own weight loss!
Suggestions:

1) Put your left hand up in front of your chest; then your right hand approximately four inches apart from each other. Bring hands together rather rapidly, creating a clapping sound. Repeat ten times. (This is because you deserve a round of applause; 14 pounds in 3 weeks is kick-butt awesome!)

2) I LOVE broccoli but realize many don't. My favorite snack is to put broccoli in a steamer, along with a sliced bell pepper, a sliced red pepper, and a sliced zucchini. Steam for 15 minutes. Want more flavor? Top with spicey salsa. I've found some broccoli haters who love this concoction. (They say when it's steamed like that the don't feel as though they "are eating trees.) It's so filling; and you can pig out without guilt. (I don't know how well this will work for you though b/c I know you don't wan to end up with CF bloat, and it is pretty gassy) :0)

I followed your directions under step 1 without knowing what I was doing and ended up clapping :) Thanks for the laugh! Also, I love broccoli! That recipe sounds great!
Another variation on the recipe that adds some crunch is to use the same receipe but stiry-fry in a wok. Let the veggies slight crisp around the edges. At the right time, add some cubed tofu and some soy sauce. Although I sweat a ton from vigorous work-outs, I'm a little careful with the soy because of the sodium content (but I doubt you would need to watch as closely as a CF'er).

When/if you get discouraged, also remember how much your weight-control journey is a great thing for Mandi and Peanut. You're one of the only CF people I know (who hasn't had a transplant) that has had to battle weight, so you are truly unique.

I certainly know others in my shoes, but I do recognize that we are definitely the minority. I have always said that I am blessed to be fat!
I too am "blessed" to be fat. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was the reason for my late diagnosis. Now at 35, I am trying to lose the extra pounds so I will be ready when transplant time comes around.

The last time I dieted really strict, probably 10 years ago, I lost 40 pounds in 2 months. I know, I know, too much. I followed Weight Watchers at home and drank LOTS of water. The weight just fell off for some reason. I always stayed within my points range at that time. I don't remember even doing any exercising!

I guess my point is, keep up what you are doing. Cut the calories, increase the water. You are doing great!!!

Thank you Shawna!!
Still struggling here too. I had a few days of eating great then I splurged for three days straight. I am starting over and have had three good days so far. I think I'm really gonna do it this time! But man, this is hard!
