Recharged.

There are some times that I know I need to get recharged.

The need to be recharged is an obvious one - it feels like I'm running on fumes. I'm constantly tired and actually looking forward to putting my head on the pillow (very rare for me as I like "doing" rather than sleeping). My body starts to feel heavier. My legs feel like they are walking through sludge the whole day. My mind feels foggy. My brain feels fried.

So what's needed at a time like this? It's simple really...

SLEEP!

I started to feel very run down this past weekend. I wasn't all that eager to get to the gym and everything felt like it required more effort. Multiple times throughout the day I snuck in an espresso shot (or two) to try and give myself a little pick-me-up. I was running around quite a bit, but it felt more like sleep walking.

Now I'm a pretty scheduled guy. If you asked others, they'd probably say that I'm very scheduled. I wake up at the same time everyday (5:45am) and I go to sleep at the same time every night (9:30pm). Well, I lay in bed at 9:30pm. Actually falling asleep usually happens by 10:30pm. I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time every day but Sunday. I email at the same time every day. I do social networking and web surfing during selected times. Anyway, you get the drift.

The only "flexible" part of my schedule is bed time. If I have family in town, want to hang with Mandi longer or I stay up to catch a certain game, my bed time gets bumped back. Yet, my wake-up time stays the same. (A baby tends to do that to you).

So, in the interest of keeping with my strategy of controlling what I can control, I did the only thing I could do in this situation. I went to bed earlier. I know, genius, right?

The last two nights my head has hit the pillow at 8:30pm instead of 9:30pm and I'll tell you what - I can feel the difference. I can feel the difference from when I first wake up, and the feeling stays with me for most of the day.

So here's to getting an additional hour of sleep while I can. I hoping a couple more nights of this will get my battery back in the "green" zone :)

Thankful Thursday: 7pm & SleepEasy Solution

It's thankful Thursday time! We all have so much to be thankful for and we love to take this opportunity just to write down each and everything that comes to mind. Please take this time to share with us what you're thankful for as well. If you have a blog expressing your thankfulness, please share the link! Without further ado, here's what we're thankful for:

Mandi's List:

I'm thankful for a 7 o'clock bedtime for Mckenna. We start putting Mckenna down at 7PM every night...and I LOVE IT. We were putting her down at 10 and then moved it to 9 and then 8 (over the course of the last few months). And with starting her bedtime routine an hour before bedtime, it would "ruin" dinner time. It really threw off trying to make dinner, eat, etc and then we didn't have much "us" time. But with a 7PM bedtime, we can eat after she goes down and have time just us in the evening. The best part is she is a very happy girl going to bed then. Win-win situation all around.

I'm thankful for the book The SleepEasy Solution. I'll write a whole blog on this later, but for now I'll just say that this may be the single best book I've ever read, and may save my sanity and get both me and Mckenna more sleep at night. We are three nights into the method and it has worked like a charm. (One quick note - if you're against a little crying for a baby, please don't tell me. It took a lot of back and forth and reading to work into being willing to give this a try, and I don't think I can take a bunch of angry comments...ha!)

I'm thankful for a hubby who does it all. I hate doing laundry. Ok, I shouldn't say laundry. I don't mind the act of putting it into the washer and switching it to the dryer, but I HATE folding laundry. So often I do laundry, and it just sits in the dryer or laundry baskets for days...sometimes weeks (I know, embarrassing). This weekend Ronnie did several loads of laundry and folded that all. WAHOO!! I can't think of a sweeter thing for my hubby to do around here.

Ronnie's List:

I'm thankful that Mckenna's bedtime is now earlier. We used to put Mckenna down anywhere between 830 and 930 for much of her first 6 months on this planet. Lately however, we've been putting her down at 7pm. This calls for us to start her bedtime routine much earlier which cuts into the daylight hours BUT it gives Mandi and I a couple hours each night to just hang out with each other. Every morning that I wake up, I start counting down the time to those couple precious one-on-one hours.

I'm thankful for a growing garden. This is the first year that I ever tried planting seeds and so far, so good. Everything has sprouted and seems to be getting bigger every time I journey out that way (which is a few times a day). I'm still trying to get the watering down, but in due time, I'm sure it will come. It's always trial and error when it comes to watering anything in this desert heat.

I’m thankful for second-hand stores. Mandi and I picked up another jogging stroller this week after I backed over our first jogging stroller with our car. Whoops. It wouldn't have been a big deal, but I actually managed to bend the frame in on itself. We plan on getting it fixed if the cost isn't too high, but int the mean time, we're so thankful that we stumbled across a jogging stroller at a second-hand place. Mckenna loves it and has been taking many of her afternoon naps while touring the neighborhood.

So, what are you thankful for today?

Nighttime Waking

You may think this is a blog about Mckenna and her nighttime sleep habits. However, this blog has nothing to do with Mckenna, and everything to do with my hubby.

As some of you may have read in the past, Ronnie sleeps with oxygen at night. A few years back, he told his doctors that he often woke up with headaches, so they did a sleep study and found that his sats were dropping at night...hence the headaches. So ever since then he's been sleeping with 2 liters of oxygen, breathed in through a nasal cannula. Ever since he started sleeping with oxygen he sleeps so much deeper, better, quieter and wakes up with no headaches.

You may ask yourself, "quieter?!" And the answer is, "yes...quieter!" I'm sure most of you CF spouses, and maybe some parents, can related. There is a certain "snore" that Ronnie does sans oxygen. It's a half snore, have gasp sound, that is loud enough to make it hard to sleep. He's slightly loud when he's sleeping on his sides and really loud when he's on his back.

So I'm sure you're wondering why I'm posting this and what it has to do with me. I am the oxygen police. In the night if I hear loud breathing, I reach over and feel his face to see where the cannula is; when I get back into bed after feeding Mckenna, I feel his face; when I go to the bathroom and come back to bed; I check his face when I hear a "pufffshhhhhhhh" sound (which is almost alway the nasal cannula blowing into his eyes); I feel his face when he's breathing really loud. I feel his face and wake him to fix his oxygen at least 2-3 times a night. I do it for him (so he sleeps better) and I do it for me (so I sleep better not listening to him). Annnnd I also do it because when he's slightly awake I can say, "snuggle me," and he will! Hehe!

What's the point of this post? There isn't one. Other than maybe if you or your loved one wakes up with headaches it may be a good time to do a sleep study. And I'd love to hear from those of you who wear oxygen at night...where all have you found your nasal cannulas? I'm often shocked where I end up finding Ronnie's. Anyone have tips for keeping it in place?

Mckenna Monday: Back in a Groove

Well it's been awhile since I've written, so I figured I'd chime in and let you know what's been happening with me, now that I'm a big, bad 4.5 month old.

I got into a bit of a rut while daddy was in the hospital. I think I was overstimulated during the day since I was in a fun place with lots of new things to look at and tons of new faces smiling at me, so I didn't nap well, and then at night, sleeping at grandma's, I just couldn't sleep. It was hot, and then cold and then REALLY hot, and then REALLY cold all night. There were different sounds. The pack 'n play just isn't as comfy as my crib at home and my routine all day had been thrown off, so I slept horribly. I was up every hour or so, and would only really sleep if I was in mom's arms. She was nice and let me nurse pretty much all night, which I loved because that was the one thing that felt familiar and comfortable so that's all I wanted all night long. Anywhoo, after dad got out of that fun place with all the cool things, I think they called it a hospital, I was still just out of my groove for another 4 or 5 nights. And then, like magic, I was able to sleep again like before. I swear mom loves me a little more those nights. She doesn't know I can tell, but she sure is happy to see me when I get up in the morning. Now I go to bed between 8:30 and 9, wake up to eat once and then get up for the day between 7:30 and 8:15. Ah I feel good when I sleep well.

And all this sleep is making me one big baby. They were a bit worried at my 4 month checkup that I dropped from between the 25th and 50th percentile to between the 10th to the 25th. Mom wasn't worried. She could see all my rolls and that I was happy, so she brushed it off as if the doctors didn't know what they were talking about (it probably helped ease her mind that I was in the 5th percentile when born, and just happened to shoot up because of her oversupply issue, so she felt like I was finally where I should be). Anyways, to just be sure I didn't keep dropping in percentiles, I went back last Friday for a weight check. Wouldn't you know it, I gained a pound - putting me at 12lbs 11oz like a big girl. They were happy with that and mom said "I told you so" with her eyes...I already recognize her "I told you so" face...which I'm not sure is a good thing because I think I may be in for a lot of those when I hit high school.

Lastly, I want to tell you about all my tricks. I roll tummy to back, sit up when holding myself with my arms for added support, play with toys hanging in front of me while I'm on my belly, skootch around my playmat to get to different toys I want to play with (although sometimes I skootch off the mat so I can get a better view of the TV), and I love talking to my mom and dad! The new trick I'm working on is rolling back to front. I'm getting close, but mom says it'll be another month...I'll show her and then give her MY "I told you so" face!!

That's it from me. Oh, one more thing, I'm still swaddled at night...any tips for how to get my out of it AND me still be able to sleep?

Making the Most of Opportunities

Hi, Y'all...Mandi Here (thought I'd give you the heads up since it isn't Monday!)

The title may make it sound as if I'm going to share with you some great, life-changing opportunity that I have triumphantly capitalized on that resulted in me being transformed and bettered. If you're looking for that kind of post, you're definitely going to be disappointed. This is a tale of a tiny, insignificant opportunity that you'll likely question why I took the time to share it...never-the-less, here we go...

Mckenna likes to wake up to eat in the night...but shoot so does my mother-in-law (sorry, Denise, it was too easy...Ron Sr., maybe don't let her read this one!). Afterall, that's what babies are wired to do, right? Anywhoo, she tends to wake up somewhere between 3 and 7 to eat, and then goes back down until between 8 and 9. When I hear her on the monitor, I typically stagger down the hallway, illuminating my steps with the light of my cell phone. I then sit half-consious as she enjoys her mid-night snack, stagger back to my room, slither back into bed, and quickly drift back into dreamland. Well last night (Thursday night), I carried out my typical nightly ritual, except I crawled back into bed, only to lay awake. For those of you who have ever been up in the night, and tried with all your might to will yourself back to sleep, but couldn't, you know the feeling. It can be frustrating...right?

Well I had two choices, I could take a sleeping pill (which would require going to the store because we don't have that kind of thing in our pharmacy, I mean house). OR I could get up. So instead of getting annoyed that my little hungry monster was back to bed and I was awake, I decided to make the most of the opportunity. I got up, made a cup of coffee and started in on my work day. I figured if I was awake, why not just get up, finish my work day before she and Ronnie wake up, and then I could PLAY the rest of the day...maybe even nap. And I have to say, I have been incredibly productive (well until I decided to write this blog when I realized Ronnie didn't have anything scheduled to post...but what's a 20 minute break, right?).

Moral of the story? There are a few. First, if you don't want to be up in the night, don't make a baby. Second, if you can't sleep, but want to, choose Unisom, not coffee. And lastly, make the most of opportunities today.

The Perfect Way to End a Day...

Man, what a day! First though, I think we ought to start with the weekend that preceded it. This weekend was a blast. We had a successful event for CysticLife on Saturday (pictures here) and I'm so thankful that Fred Astaire Dance Studios would be willing to raise money for the CF community. The studio required nothing from us return and just asked that we enjoy the show. We were pleased to find out that they sold close to 250 tickets which was well over their average of 130 as compared to past years. It was extra special as my family drove up for the event and Mandi's mom happened to be in town as well. We were all able to hang out afterwards and grab a bite to eat (grandma included) which is definitely one of my favorite things to do.

The fun continued on Sunday when Nancy (mom-in-law), Josh (bro-in-law), Chrissy (sis-in-law) and Wongers came down to hang out and enjoy some homemade tacos. Mandi and I love hosting company. We actually had to run out and get some shower curtains as all of them stayed the night (except for Wong). Nancy was flying out the next morning and Josh/Chrissy wanted to see what the morning commute was like as they are thinking about moving to the area (don't even get me started about how excited I would be if that happened). Anyways, it made for a great time and I'm hoping that we have another hangout/sleepover/dinner party real soon!

Monday started as any typical Monday full of work with a little bit of work sprinkled in. I was actually looking forward to getting back to it as I worked less this weekend than I normally do. The real fun started at the end of our workday though. We were able to babysit the A-Clan, minus one member. We met my cousins, and their gaggle of kids, at a local park to hang out with them as they took Ella (oldest child and only daughter) to her first grade orientation. We were left with Levi, Noah and Luke. All are adorable and all are full of energy upon energy. The job was made simple in the fact that this park has a killer playground. The kids spent most of the time on the "monkey web" as they call it. It's this big contraption made up of 100's of ropes that form almost a pyramid shape that the boys (and I) had a fun time climbing. The park also has a dog park inside of it, so it was also fun to watch all of the dogs come and go. We only got to spend a couple of hours with them, but it was packed full of excitement and non-stop action. Which leads me to the best way to end the day...

...I'm actually writing this early Tuesday morning as I just woke up next to Mandi on the couch. We fell asleep snuggling on the couch at who knows what time. We couldn't keep our eyes open (which is rare for me) and before I knew it, it was the middle of the night and I still had to do my last treatment. That last treatment is currently shaking me as I sit here and I type this blog. I can look to my left and see my beautiful bride just laying here sound asleep. I can't believe how lucky I am to be able to see her every night before I close my eyes and then wake up with her every morning when they open.

My vest just ended and now I must be off to bed; it all starts over in the morning. If I'm luckily though, tomorrow will end just as today.

CF Grandma Needs Our Help!!!

Here is an email I received from a concerned grandmother concerning her grandchild who has CF. I haven't come across this in talking with other parents, so I couldn't be that much help. I'm hoping that some of you guys will be able to relate and leave her some comments about what you think may be going on.

Hi Ronnie,
I saw an invitation from you for queries by new parents. My daughter has a four-month-old son who was diagnosed at two weeks old; she does not have time for Facebook or even for emailing right now. Our little Aidan sleeps only around ten hours out of twenty-four; he gets so tired, sleepy, and cranky during the day but can't fall asleep. When he does go to sleep during the day he only sleeps a short time.

My daughter has mentioned this problem at her treatment center (Vanderbilt) several times but they don't seem to grasp the severity of the behavior - although they do recognize he isn't gaining the weight he should, given the number of calories he ingests. I had this wild idea that maybe his electrolytes are depleted when he is so "worked up" and "hyper," and perhaps several ounces of Pedialyte could help. Table salt is added to his formula but maybe there are other elements missing from his body. Do you have any other ideas about this problem - have you heard of this problem? They are desperate for rest and peace!

I live three to four hours away and cannot relieve my daughter very often!
Hoping to hear from you soon,
Aidan's grandmother (Name Withheld)
So what do you guys think? CF related? Did any of you experience this with your CF child (or non-CF child for that matter)? Let's help her out!

Beneficial Email Exchange with a Reader

I think that everybody can gain something from reading this email exchange. This is my correspondence with a reader of my blog. It is used with permission. Enjoy!

Email:

Hey Ronnie-
So you are not going to be too happy with my progress over the past week, well I guess I am just not too happy with myself. Last week was rough in terms of exercising. I had an extremely busy week getting ready for the Brooklyn Great Strides walk which was on Sunday. I also decided that it would be a good idea to have all my family/friends over to my house for a BBQ after the walk. Well it turns out that everyone was extremely enthusiastic about the walk this year…in terms of participating and donating, which was absolutely great!! But I also ended up with about 50 people coming over…and on top of that it rained… so the BBQ became an indoor event…and let’s just say I am a perfectionist who gets very easily stressed out!!! But all in all it was a really great day…we still walked ponchos, umbrellas and all! Everyone was a little drenched but had a lot of fun!

On top of that 2 days before the walk was my boyfriend’s birthday. He is a huge hockey fan, specifically Rangers fan so I decided that it would be a good idea to make him a Rangers birthday cake. The good news is that the cake turned out awesome! The bad news is that it took about
2 whole days of my life to make it…haha. Bottom line, I only got moving
2 days last week, a 3.2 mile bike ride one day, and a 3.5 mile walk another….boooo!

So I know that these are all poor excuses, which I am not buying from myself, and I hoping to make this week better. It has been raining in new York for 5 days straight now, and looks like it will continue for 5 more which is a bummer because that kind of knocks out the outdoor exercise…but there is still the gym. Also, I am having a PICC placed on Friday afternoon for another round of IVs….fun stuff! So, I was wondering if you have ever kept up an exercise routine while on IV? Usually I am pretty knocked out the first week of it, so I don’t know if I’d really be up for anything strenuous…but I’m thinking just slow-paced long walks might do the trick until I am feeling a little better.

Also been doing a little better about my sleeping schedule. Getting to bed by 10 is really a challenge for me…but 11/11:30 is working out well right now. That’s actually where I am headed now…

Talk to you soon!

My Response:

It’s certainly most important that you recognize that you are not happy with your own effort. The great thing is that you are the only one who can control that effort so it is literally and completely up to you. I will be here as a support mechanism and do anything and everything I can do to give you tips and motivate you. Ultimately, it is up to you to get it done, whatever “it” may be.

So let’s look at the last week. Bottom Line: Sometimes life gets busy and we can’t always control that. We have obligations other than ourselves to attend to and that is ok. Don’t beat yourself up for being a good friend, girlfriend, daughter etc…Believe me, there has been days in my life these last couple of months that there was just going to be NO WAY of completing my full exercise routine. Here’s what I think the key is though: DO SOMETHING. It doesn’t matter if that something is walking or jogging half a mile or going to the gym and walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes. The battle is never doing it once we start, it’s the actual starting it part that is hard. There are times where me night just gets super busy and if that happens, instead of walking 3 miles, I’ll just do one. Or I’ll do the stair stepper for 15 minutes.

The key is just to get your body moving. You’re body will start to expect to do something and you will start to form a craving for it and actually feel weird if you miss a workout. We are creatures of habit. Make sure that your habit is doing SOMETHING everyday, no matter how short or small.

And let’s not forget, you did a 3.2 mile bike ride AND a 3.5 mile walk! You know what I call that in terms of comparing it to the week before: PROGRESS!!!! Now here is your challenge, for the next 7 days, do SOMETHING everyday. It doesn’t matter if that something is walking up 10 flights of stairs at a local building and it only takes you 5 minutes. You are letting your body AND mind know that you WILL train everyday no matter what. Exercising is just as much of a mentality as it is a physical thing. If you set aside a small amount of time everyday, eventually that will become a habit. And like I said before, you will start to crave that habit and you will see the benefits of having a GOOD habit in your life.

As far as a PICC line and exercise goes, for me, it has never been a problem. When I first start IV’s in the hospital, I too feel like doodoo, but I do focus on at least walking around the unit a couple of times a day. Usually by the second week I am able to do a fast paced walk outside of the hospital and by the third week, I am doing stairs or jogging. The doctors have never told me to back off because of a PICC. So again, I would try to do something everyday while you have your PICC and just play it by ear as to how strenuous it is.

I’m glad to hear you are getting to bed earlier. That is a HUGE part of this whole process. I promise that as you start to do more, you will be able to go to bed even earlier yet. Just make sure you’re not hitting your snooze button 100 times in the morning!

Good Luck!! I KNOW YOU CAN DO THIS! I’m excited to see what the next report will bring!

Do LIFE.

My Lungs REALLY Opened Up!!!!

6:00am: I don't know why, but the Good Sleep fairy has now visited 3 nights in a row! It feels sooooo good to get a full night's sleep. Just for a little sleep history on me: I've never been able to get to bed before midnight, I would stay awake in my bed for AT LEAST 30 minutes, and then I would wake up about 10 times during the night....oh, and I would generally sleep in till about 9am or 10am. Now fast forward to today: I'm in bed by 10pm, I fall asleep within 5 minutes, I wake up maybe 3 times, and sleeping in would be 7am or 8am but I'm usually up by 6am. You might be asking yourself, "Why such a drastic change?". Answer: I have no clue. Here would be my best guesses though...I'm an "old" man. I'm working out harder than I have for years. I'm wearing oxygen at night. I wake up so early and never slow down during the day. The Sleep Fairy finally remembered my address. That's all I got. Your guess is as good as mine.

The walk went really well this morning. Kind of same ol same ol as far as the mucus goes. I did have a coughing spree about half way through my walk that caused me to dry heave, but I recovered pretty quickly. My foot felt great the whole walk. And lastly, Jezzabel is on a new kick where she poops 3 times now every walk. I don't know if you've noticed, but that's one reason my times have been slower. She literally craps 3 times before 7am. That's better than her daddy, and quite honestly, I'm a bit jealous.

Total Distance: 2.1 miles Time: 38'19"

5:00pm: Today was leg and shoulder day with Mandi in tow, so I was really looking forward to her kicking my butt! She did not disappoint. We continued to just rehab my shoulder, but when it came to legs, we really beat them up. We ended up doing a circuit of sorts for our legs and shoulders that I really enjoyed. While she was lifting her legs, I would be doing my shoulders. After we were done with one set, we would switch. This kept us in constant motion and we both worked up a huge sweat. I was doing some very deep breathing so it was good for my lungs as well. One thing to keep in mind about weight training is that it can also be a great way to exercise your lungs. The key to it is simple: KEEP MOVING. Do your best to never stop.

The butt kicking certainly did not stop with the legs and shoulders though. Mandi then took me through a ab routine that had me begging for mercy. I'm serious. I think at one point I actually asked her if we could stop. And if you know Mandi, you already know her answer. NO!!!!! It got to the point where I could barely support my own weight with my abs and it felt like I was working them out just by walking. We were doing all kinds of crazy things to our stomachs. Medicine balls, kick flips, twists and turns, you name it, we did it. I was absolutely beat when it was all said and done.

After going into the locker room to freshen up and weigh myself, we were walking out the door when it suddenly happened. I had the urge to do MORE. I don't know why, but I didn't want the great workout to end. We jumped on the elliptical and did a quick 15 minutes on them to finish off the day. I was drenched in sweat from head to two and my lungs haven't felt as open as they did today for a very long time. I just kept pushing it and pushing it and it really paid off. I am absolutely exhausted, but I feel GREAT. Current Weight: 184 lbs.

Oxygen Problems

6:00am: Alright! Time for a fresh new week. Not that I was feeling fresh this morning, but I'm hoping my energy level starts to pick up. I didn't sleep well last night and woke up about a dozen times or so to mess around with my oxygen tubing. I would wake up with the cannulas blowing into my eyes, around my forehead, or one cannula in my nostril with the other out. My nostrils were also extra dry last night and possibly starting to crack on the inside cause I had a sharp pain inside of my nose every time I woke up. I guess it just comes with the territory. Sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad. The good being that I usually sleep like a rock at night now and I think the o2 has a lot to do with it. The bad being the bloody noses, pain, and oxygen tubing choking me out in the middle of the night. Oh well, gotta keep truckin!

The walk was alright this morning. I was coughing more than normal, but I was getting a lot up and it was clear in color. I still feel kind of tight so I need to really focus this week on opening these airbags up. My foot is becoming the bigger problem. Even with taking the day off yesterday, besides the morning walk, my foot was already in pain this morning. I really need to nip this in the bud, cause it will be tough to run a mile on one foot. I'm not sure what it's going to take, but I'll figure it out. Who knows, maybe by this afternoon it will be fine and dandy? I'll just have to wait and see. It did slow me down a bit on my walk, so it better shape up or I'll just cut it off.

Total Distance: 2.1 miles Time: 39'13"

3:00pm: I finally got to the gym today after a full day of working on some different stuff on the computer. It was legs and shoulder day which is never very fun. Today was no exception. My shoulders hurt from the very first lift, especially my left one. By the time I got to my last lift it hurt to put my arm over my head. I decided not to push it and only lifted the bar for my last lift to hopefully stretch it out a little. I'll be changing up my routine in May, and for my shoulders, this will include lifts that will strengthen the tendons and ligaments. I won't worry about the muscle for a while. It's getting to the point that I think I'm going to start to do damage.

I blasted my legs today. They were feeling pretty weak from the first lift on, but I challenged them on every lift and increased the weight. When I was done with my last leg lift, I literally had to catch myself on a railing when I tried to walk down some stairs. My legs completely gave out. They were absolute jello. It was such a strange sensation and in some kind of sick way, I enjoyed it. Current Weight: 188 lbs.

6:00pm: My legs never recovered from the workout early and by the time it came for Mandi and I to walk/run they still felt like they weighed about 500 pounds. I didn't want to just sit on my butt though, so we decided to do a quick mile. By quick, I mean, just a mile. We didn't walk it faster than normal, and in fact, took our time. The weather was gorgeous and we just enjoyed eachother and conversation. My left foot still feels a bit strained, so I'm really hoping that it recovers soon.

Total Distance: 1.0 miles Time: 18'17"

Total Distance Walked for Day: 3.1 miles
